1. How do you make your papercut portraits?
My work is quite different from traditional papercut art. I like to think of it as building up an image using layers of cut paper in the same way that I would build up a painting using flat layers of paint. It is more about adding three dimensional depth and detail rather than taking bits away. I work in 2 stages – firstly a digital design, then I use this as a template for the papercut. My digital design process has developed significantly, in order to retain more detail from the original photo, really capturing the essence of your loved ones. Once I am happy with the design, I bring it to life in paper, often using 4 or more layers of different colours. Each layer is meticulously cut (using tiny scissors) and assembled by hand (no paper cutting machines in my studio!) enabling me to make alterations to the design as I work. The intricate layers of paper create a unique three dimensional texture and reveal the time, skill and care that have gone into the handmade production. Even if I am producing multiples of the same design, each one will be slightly different and unique as I often make decisions as I am cutting. I only use acid-free high quality artist’s paper and glue to preserve the colours and produce gifts that will last for a lifetime.
2. What do you need me to provide?
A digital photo (which can be emailed) and colour preferences, ie. skin tones / bright colours / purples / greys.
3. What sort of pictures work best?
Good quality photos with lots of light and facial detail.
4. Can I get a portrait of multiple subjects?
Yes, although more than one subject takes more time to produce and this will be reflected in the price.
5. Do you do pet portraits?
Yes! Furry, feathered and scaly friends all make excellent subjects.
6. I’m not sure which picture to choose
Don’t worry, order an Etsy gift card and direct the recipient to the Imagine Attic shop.
7. What are the exact sizes of the papercut portraits?
A6 is 148 x 105mm, A5 is 210 x 148mm and A4 is 297 x 210mm (all sizes approximate).
8. Are the portraits framed or unframed?
Papercut portraits are mounted on white board to fit standard sized frames. Portraits on canvas are stretched over wooden frames and can either be hung as they are or professionally framed.
9. HELP! I need a gift delivered by Friday!
The turnaround period for portraits is usually about 2 weeks. However, if your order is urgent, let me know and if I have availability, I will prioritise your order. You will always be given an estimate of when I expect to complete and post it. Alternatively, give an Etsy gift card and direct the recipient to the Imagine Attic shop.
10. How do I pay?
Payment can be made securely via Paypal or via the Imagine Attic shop on Etsy.
11. What if I’m not happy with my order?
If you are in any way dissatisfied with your order, please contact me within 7 days of receipt to discuss the problem and I will do my best to resolve it.
